Malta, Illinois | That was kind of my point. Subsoil moisture is a golden thing and much prefer having it versus not having it. If yields turn out like I think they will in this area it is proof that you can raise a good crop with little subsoil moisture provided you catch a couple of really nice rains at just the right time. I saw two house foundations and a pipeline dug up for repair early this summer and beyond a couple of feet from the top, the lack of any discernible moisture was truly frightening. Of course soil types make a huge difference with some being able to hold a lot more moisture than others. Another very important distinction between northern Illinois and locations west of the Mississippi River is that you tend to get much hotter summer temperatures than we do over here. We get hot weather but generally nothing sustained like out west that just sucks moisture very quickly. | |
