north central iowa | Always wise to have a cow full of grass hay before adding to group and new diet. I am not familiar with brewers grain. I am assuming she has probably ate too much grain, which leads to low ph in the rumen which in turn stops the rumen from contracting. I don't think passing of the gas is what you are looking for. You hope she gets loose and passes the grain. Best to get her in with a few others and give them stemmy grass hay. The saliva that a cow produces (high ph) while chewing hay helps get the rumen back to neutral ph and back contracting and functioning again. Now if your diet has a lot of leafy alfalfa in it that will cause a frothy bloat. So evaluation of the diet is key to understanding how to help the cow. | |
