Ive never owned a VT , But used many different ones as rentals . A VT will make the stalks into smaller pieces and if it is working properly it may distribute the residue a bit more evenly . I think you want to bury a bunch of residual and a VT will not accomplish that . Something like a fairly heavy disc with a good cultipacker hooked behind it will do that .
Some in this area will run a good wheel rake threw the standing stalks without running a shredder or mower and then bale those windrows . That keeps some stalks for erosion and wind and holding snow . But it gets rid of enough that it plants nice .
