I feed it fast enough I never have to worry about keeping it fresh, idk what the minimum would be. These bags are just on dirt so when it gets muddy you can waste some. If it gets bad enough I quit feeding out of them for a while and grind dry corn out of the bin. If you had the bags on concrete I don’t think you’d waste any. It is hard to keep the bottom plastic out of the feed.
