Subject: RE: Burn down before planting RR alfalfa

Farmington, Mo
When you say “meadow”, do you mean sod type grass is currently growing? Or, is it dead from a previous spray application?

Reason I ask is our luck with no tilling alfalfa into killed sod is marginal at best. Not sure if it’s the competition from dying plants or lack of surface moisture or…??? Our stands have been leavable but not as thick as they should be. We have much better luck no tilling into wheat stubble. Wheat harvested in June, alfalfa seeded in late August/early September. In fact, we just planted some last Friday using the wheat stubble method.

As to your original question, roundup will be your best bet for killing grass. Since it’s going to be cut 3-5 times per year for the next several years, I wouldn’t be too concerned about any potential resistant broadleaf weeds. Good luck!
