SW MN - mt. lake/windom
Start with the sale of the pig and work back. First and foremost must have a agreement to market with packer. Most likely for a group by group sales you will have the option to price the pigs off wt avg report. You can study past history to understand that there has been a significant disconnect between futures and wt avg. has been as much as 50 percent variation from futures to wt avg pricing. With the volume of pigs coming in from Canada and from what I hear of finishing capacity in the industry, we could run into shackle space restrictions this winter. This will drive for greater spread of futures to market price. Most packers don’t want to deal with forward contracts so they are discounted beyond historical averages to discourage use.
