The debate around here was always large seed vs small seed. Smaller seed required less moisture to swell and lead to germination, but if conditions were tough ( cold wet, crusted etc) the seed had less energy to push through until emergence. Larger seed sometimes struggled to sprout, in really dry conditions... would apply to corn, wheat, beans etc 6 of one, half a dozen of the other.
