I don't think battery powered electric vehicles are new. However, they are a refinement of existing technology. For example, how long have people been using battery powered electric golf carts? Another question, why do people prefer electric powered golf carts over carts with gasoline engines?

Back in the 1950s my uncle had a veneer mill in Wiggins, MS. He had a battery powered fork lift for use inside the veneer mill. Due to the fire hazard, his insurance company would not allow the use of a gasoline powered fork lift inside the mill.
