Near-north Ontario, French River | I keep hearing the high yield high management mantra... around our parts 100-120bu SRWW is obtainable with some pretty simple management. First and only shot of N ( 90-100lbs actual ) goes on in late April/ early May ( as soon after green up as possible WHEN ground conditions permit) , most guys dont spray herbicide , and then fungicide at 75% heading. This is heavy clays to clay loam soils in SW Ontario. Only guys I know that do split N applications are those growing Hard Red WW and they are doing it more to increase Protein than yield. Generallly speaking herbicide goes down in the fall, Eragon/Rup ( Sharpen and Rup to you US guys) prior to planting , start with a clean field in the fall and you likely wont need herbicide in the spring. Some guys have messed with growth regulators with mixed results. A lot of the newer varieties are short stemmed so standability is becoming less of an issue. |
