Subject: RE: First time growing wheat?

Cambridge, southwestern Nebraska
Definitely have the wheat after beans. Wheat doesn't like a lot of residue.
Fertilize, vertical till to incorporate and get some of the residue buried. Drill around 2 million seeds per acre to a variety that will stand. Westbred has .....I think it is 4418???
Drill half rates in 2 directions about 10-15 degrees from each other.
Watch tiller counts in the spring to know when to fertilize. Apply N through the pivot of stream it on. Multiple applications to spoon feed the N. Use a fungicide. Don't irrigate unless you absolutely have to at pollination. Possibly apply Palisade for a growth regulator. You need to keep it standing.
If you think corn or beans are high management, wheat may be even more. A lot of ways to manipulate wheat as far as timing goes. You need to pay attention to the details.
