Latimer Iowa | I would say adaptation of different practices is very slow. It’s hard to make changes especially when something has been working a number of years. I think seeing that different ideas can work in my okoboji muck to your few inches of soil show that practices can work with management and a goal. If we did corn on corn maybe strip till would be a thing to look at. I do not miss doing tillage work and then seeing poor quality structure and tillage layers. These pits show no reason to be doing any ripping or tillage. My guess is it will take a generation or two before major changes take place. Need to get to a 25% adaption level or so then changes would happen fast. I am amazed at the different topsoil depths on my fields. From 24 inches in some places to 50 in other soil types just 100 yards away. Key is to tailor the program to what your goals are and have an open mind.
My goal is to make the fields and soil better then when I started. If I can do that we feel successful. Also want to make enough money that people leave me alone. Haha. | |
