Latimer Iowa | We had a little field day today. Had a good turnout of about 50 and thanks to those that came and bounced ideas around. I know some of you couldn’t come and are still interested so here are a few pics. This is on Des Moines lobe of glacial soil, corn likely on clarion soil, cover crop on okoboji soil.
The pictures in corn are of the field I have posted every month all year. Corn looks good, hot and dry starting to take its toll. We washed some roots off with power washer to see them better so bottom of hole is a little wet. Both pits did have moisture at the 48 inch level. We have had around 8 inches of rain since planting. Fields are both long term cover cropped and notill. We did not find a compaction layer at all in the field that is corn. Corn roots were at least 48 inches deep with straight growth. Found many worm channels down to 42 inches. Many places where corn roots are in the worm channels and some pics show this. Pics 1-6.
Other pictures are in next field over. It was oats this year with cover crop of radish, turnips, and peas planted about August 1st. 8 years cover and notill. It has had 1.2 inches of rain since planting the covers. Surprised that the cover crop roots are down to 40 inches already and lots of roots in top 2 feet. There was a slight density level change at about 4 inches but roots are growing through it well. Pics 7-9.
Last pic is my wife’s dog in a hat. For no reason except she’s pretty.
Any thoughts are welcome. I wasn’t sure what soil pits would show but satisfied with how they looked.
Edit to add: thanks to a fellow local agtalk member with a backhoe for digging pits and I had to steal a few pics from a friend because I didn’t get good ones taken.
