I understand that, it bugs me too. Sometimes I'll have two machines going at once and it is not optimal, really should set up a dual monitor deal but haven't taken the time.

Just my opinion, consider discontinuning the hub. The little nubbins for a wireless mouse or keyboard plugged into the laptop USB ports don't protrude much. If your monitor utilizes an old fasioned VGA cable, I guess I'd consider upgrading if your laptop doesn't have VGA output. The VGA to HDMI adaptor might be a part of the issue, not sure, but those adaptors have been a source of frustration for me in the past on antiquated equipment.
