Subject: Buying United Farm Tools 500 No-Till Drill - Parts no longer available

Northern Michigan
I'm thinking about buying a United Farm Tools (UFT) 5000 Grain Drill for a small hobby farm I have. After researching the manufacture, it appears UFT was bought out by Artsway Manufacturing awhile back, but unfortunately, they have discontinued their line of grain drills. I contacted Artsway and asked if they still supply parts for the UFT 5000 grain drill and I was told they no longer do so.

As you may or may not be aware, used UFT grain drills can be purchased pretty cheap now days since parts are no longer available from a Artsway. Since my hobby farm is just a hobby and my income does not depend on the operation of my equipment, I'm thinking about taking a chance on buying the UFT 5000 for under $4,000. Yes it's a risk, but this no-till drill is much cheaper than purchasing something newer that is in current production and has parts availability.

I've never used a no till drill before so I'm wondering what the guru's think about this. I imagine I'd be able to still buy common parts of drills, such as the opener discs, coulters, press wheels, and seed tubes, etc. I would also think this drill probably used many misc parts that can be bought off the shelf from other manufacturers. Unfortunately, if a unique major part on this drill were to break, I'd be SOL.

What do you think? Is it worth the chance to buy this drill or would you consider it a stupid idea. In addition, I could keep my eye out out for another cheap UFT 5000 which could be used for spare parts. I have a 100HP John Deere tractor so I should have no problems pulling this drill. Any opinions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
