West Central Illinois | I'm going to calve my first set of heifers this spring starting late March before the cow herd starts in late April. Do you calve heifers out on grass? Are they near a working pen where you can get them caught if issues? I calve all my cows out on pasture where I can't necessarily catch one if problems but 99% of the time no problems except 1 prolapse this year that remains a mystery.
These are fullblood southpoll heifers bred back SP bull. Calves even out of commercial cows still no bigger than 60 lb usually, many times lighter than that. The cow that prolapse was a big black gelbveh cross cow but was bred back SP, calf was unusually big but she was a bug 1400 lb cow
I hate to lock them up somewhere and mess with the pasture rotation but hate to have problems and be able to do nothing about it
