Eastern NE KS | Fair/show calves stretch what is normal. 1968 calves were growing bigger than the belt buckle calves of prior years. Common 4-H calves ran 950-1100.
Can't answer whole question but my sister won Grand Champion Steer at the 1966 or '68 Mid-America Fair. Side point, steer wt 800. Kansas Gov. Docking sold the calf for $2/lb. The calf was 'right' for a traditional judge: small, 'typie', baby beef, reg. Angus.
There were more 'modern' calves at the show too. My guess, 1050 live wt. Sis was young but mature for age (mind and body) and pretty. Competition didn't have much of a chance.
Sis used the windfall to travel to Europe for 6 weeks tour and education. She gained 1hr high school credit toward 1 year early graduation.
