| I recently posted in another group and got a bunch of aggressive responses and people jumping on my case. So I want to try here.
I have a few acres of pasture, not that great of forage, and access to a large dirt floor barn with a concrete lot and feed bunks out front. I am selling freezer beef. I currently have a couple steers 60 days out from processing and a couple of calves ready to wean soon. With access to the barns I was thinking about putting a pause on the herd of cows and feeding calves and yearlings in more of a dry lot set up.
So I was going to buy in some more weaned spring calves, same age as the couple I have now (6-7 months), winter them and put them on full feed next spring, around a year old.
People were saying: “Good luck with no forage” and “you’ll have feet problems with them on concrete their whole life”.
So my questions:
1. Is it really all that uncommon for a spring born calf to spend the winter in a dry lot and then enter the feedlot around a year old? There is no forage to graze during the winter so I am confused by that argument.
2. If you had access to the facilities as described above how would you recommend structuring a freezer beef business. And yes, I do realize it’s expensive and difficult to make money.
Thank you very much! Appreciate any friendly advice. And if it’s to not do it, I guess I’ll consider, but I’m pretty committed.
