Central Missouri | A bit more of a follow up. The two rows on the left are the only two irrigated rows on the farm and only for 100’ as we used a mister hose from the well. We irrigated those because we revamped our corn production system 3 years ago and we have had 3 really dry years in a row. We wanted to see if our new system would keep our corn healthy all the way through black layer. The corn is at about 3/4 milk line and the experiment looks successful. In the first picture the two rows on the left were irrigated and the entire rest of the farm unirrigated. They are taller, darker green and the ears are substantially bigger. The corn is still pumping nutrients in the ears which is what we wanted to confirm.
The second picture is the difference in ear size, same hybrid picked 20’ apart, note that even on the unirrigated smaller ear it pollinated fully and held its kernels. You might note also the lack of dent. Some of that is hybrid some nutrition.
