A calorie of ribeye steak will gave an entirely different effect on pancreas insulin response than a calorie of table sugar. The metabolism will be completely different. Protein takes a lot of energy just to digest it. Sugar does not. So a calorie of meat is quite different than sugar when it comes to storing energy as fat for later use.
Insulin levels are the key. High insulin levels equals store fat. Low insulin levels equals burn fat for energy.
The calories in calories out hypothesis is only half right. Even though the calories burn the same in a laboratory test instruments, does not mean they metabolize the same in the body's digestion. Our digestive tract and liver and pancreas are not a Baum Calorimeter.
