I couldn't find a manufactured D-cell battery to 9v adaptor as described before. You would have to build it. I searched under DC to DC converters, looking for a module to convert 12V to 9V. Found one source for a 2W, single output module that will deliver 9V up to 222mA output from a 9-36V source:

This would allow you to use an old car battery and convert it down to 9V for your weather station.
