Southwest Illinois | We are near St. Louis. We plant a fairly large plot for a major company. We planted it around April 10th this year. Maturity ranged from 108 to 120 day. We were super dry and had moderately high daytime temps but evenings did fall back in the 60s to low 70s. We finally received some rain around July 2 and have had nearly ideal conditions since. Our corn plot started showing tassels around June 20th, obviously the early maturities first with the fuller season showing around June 30. Our soil tests were good, except for potash but we can't seem to build it in our soils. That all being said when walking the plot with an agronomist earlier this week, we found that the varieties in the 108 to 110 range had some pollination issues and a lot of tip back. They look very much like your ears. As we moved into the 113 day and later, we saw much better pollination and less tip back. Our guess is the fuller season corn will outyield the early. I assume you were probably ahead of us by at least a week or 2. If you were very dry and fairly hot, I think that has more to do with it than fertility. Obviously, if you weren't under stress, then I guess you have to look at something else. | |
