Sounds like you lost some ground cause you got outbid. Why not just match the rent bid? Oh, that's too expensive? Then why not grow beets?
I never understand when people are mad 'cause they got outbid. Nobody stole anything. It wasn't yours. Should the landowner stay with you for less money. What would you do?
