You are correct sugarbeets are planted in the spring. I believe 55% of the sugar that is grown in the US is beet production. Beets are a annual crop and cane I believe is a 18 month crop. However due to marketing allotments domestic sugar production will not likely increase. The shortfall will be made up by increased imports. You are also correct to state that some areas have had very difficult times in the near past, the transition from private to Coop status has been very difficult for some. We in the RRV (the largest growing region) are very dedicated to sugar production and our stability relies on sugar. Our company has been a Coop since 1973 and have had growing pains as well.
