WY, OK | Totally agree it hurts when you drop $3K on a heifer bull that you can only use for 2 years because he is physically too big for them by the third year. I think it depends on the breed though, our Red Angus bulls will be mature weight at 4 yrs old or even younger, Herefords seem to take 5+ and even get too big in the 7 year range for any cow. We had a home raised Red Angus that bred as a yearling and he had no trouble reaching mature weight in a few years, he also puts on weight during breeding and still breeds better than most bulls we have bought. Of course he is also one of those that looked like a bull the minute he was born and never looked back. Anyway when they are only in the cows for 60-75 days that leaves a lot of time for them to grow and develop without the hassle of breeding. Most of ours get put on cows at 18 months, this year we had 3 new Herefords go in at about 12months of age and they did seem to hurt from it, but that is why they get supplemented with hay and grain all winter. | |
