If it's an automatic, the 8.1 will have the Allison transmission and and also a bigger rearend. One difference I can recall on the rear end was close to a 4 oil quart capacity vs around 2 quarts for the 6.0, but probably had heavier (larger) gears as well. I was always told the 6.0 only came with a 4.10 rear (in the early years) but the 8.1 could be had with the 3.73 (standard ? ) or 4.10 (optional ? ). I'm thinking the early 8.1's had an internal PCV ( I'm thinking that's what it was ? ) , where it was harder to change, and they could be prone to use oil if the valve wasn't working properly. I don't know if that was changed by '03. Good luck.
