Subject: Millwright Grain Bin-Leg Moving

Need some advice/help from those of you in areas where on farm grain facilities are more prevalent.  We have come to the conclusion that we need a more efficient means of dumping, blending and loading grain on farm.  Currently we have 80,000 bushels of storage w/ full air floors that is somewhat centralized in our operation.   In a normal year we will turn two crops (160,000) bushels of grain through this storage and have been using a 13" auger/swing hopper to fill bins the past couple years.  Plenty fast, hydraulic drive wheel makes it not too bad a job, but load out is slow and we have no way to blend grain so we usually end up over drying at least a portion of the bin.   Other negative is that we hire two combines to help us and if they are hauling to the bin then it ties up a person nearly full time to baby sit them dumping into the auger.

Current Storage

Several years ago we were able to purchase an almost new (less than 100,000 bu of grain through it) elevator facility for $.15 on the dollar.  Only problem it was/is 15-20 miles away, in the wrong direction, from anything we farm or will ever farm.  It consisted of 4 x 10,000 bushel hopper bottomed bins, 2 x 5000 bu overhead bins, and a 6,000 bu/hr Schlagel leg.  Our thought at the time was that we would use it to store seed wheat to minimize the impact of transportation cost, and if we ever wanted to move it, surely an initial investment of $.15 on the dollar would make it feasible.

We have finally reached a point where we need it or something like it closer to home, tied into our existing storage.  After visiting briefly with the two people locally that do this kind of work, I have come to the conclusion that they really aren't interested in doing it. They keep trying to push that they could install all new facilities for the cost of moving what we own.  I was a little suspect that they insisted they could sell the old bins one at a time if we were interested in selling them. Am I way off base in assuming that we should be able to find someone to move this for significantly less than new cost?  Or should we just leave it where it is, continue to use it as is, and look for someone to flip it too?
