We fill two silos every year and if hay is short make a pile on the ground. We find it is the cheapest way to produce 20+ tons of feed per acre. But silage maybe 30% water and your hay might be 9% so figure cost on a dry matter. Also rain dosn't affect silage harvest like it dose a dry ready to bale hay field. Silage equipment is not cheap. Spoilage is an issue if not feeding enough from a large silo or pile. Look into finding someone to custom chop/ bag for you.
