It's hard to go wrong with old family names. Collect the names of all your parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and great-great-grandparents, and sort through them.

Consider the likelihood of the name being switched to a girls name in the future. 'Ashley' is one example. In 1980, it was a boys name. By 1990, it was a girls name, much to the consternation of the male Ashleys of the time. Bible names are much less likely to switch genders in the future, because they're already so closely associated with a male figure.

Look at Bible names, and pick one that has traits that you admire. This is a little more controversial, but you can also pick names from contemporary fiction that you and your wife like. Gale, Tyrion, and Eomer are examples.

Based on your handle, I assume your name is Sam, or Samuel. Sam's son, or Samson, would be a logical name, but you'd have to decide whether the Biblical character of Samson is someone you're willing to have associated with your son or not.

Edit: another comment on nicknames. Avoid calling the child something ending in "ie" or "y". Sam vs Sammy. Joe vs Joey. Mose vs Mosey. Will vs Willie. Those ie or y names sound cute when referring to a child, but it's hard to shake that childish nickname as the young man matures. If you use a nickname, make sure it's one they won't cringe at when they're entering adult life.
