Axle lube oil comes from the hydraulic tank, transmission is it's own closed system.

As far as checking for possible bearing problem, about have to jack it up, and try to see if the axle drops as the housing comes up. To really check it right, you may have to give up and move the wheels out to get a real visual on it. The value of the time required, will be cheaper than a total failure, especially since that won't occur until you "really" need the tractor.
