Subject: RE: Anybody Ever Use These Tree Shears?

SE Texas

We purchased a tree shear like the ones seen at http://www.wolffmfg.com/id1.html . Ours was fabricated to work off the 3pt hitch or hooked onto our Westendorf loader using a multi-purpose bale spear frame (which can also be used as pallet forks and the tines are removeable and stored within the frame) and it also has the brush guard. We've been using the Wolff Shear for over 2 years now and haven't a single problem with it.

We also have a Worksaver SG-36 Stump grinder (also 3pt) and a Westendorf CatClaw 3D grapple on the loader which is a handy critter. I have no idea how we ever got along without a grapple on our loader before but it is nice to be able to shear a tree and then stack them to be grabbed later so we can recycle the biomass. The stump grinder is a heck of a lot faster than digging out the stump with the backhoe. It has a below grade depth of about 15 inches which is plenty for us.

If you are clearing a LOT of little stuff you might be more interested in those forestry mulchers that they have. They pretty much cut down the tree and grind it up and can go down about 4 inches below grade. Definitely for the smaller stuff but worth considering. You may want to rent one first since the prices aren't cheap. I'm not sure what the costs are for the wear items on those mulchers (also called brush cutters) but they are cool to watch. Here is a video of one on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgvvxYA2Tnw
