MT-ND | We have a 400(25,000 miles) and a 1000(new). No issues like what you say. Nor do the neighbors who have 1000s.
Reverse it depends on how you shift it, I've seen people take it out chasing cows. Complete stop, drop rpm to idle, then shift, it is not an automatic like a car.
Backfiring means you have a short in the wiring harness somewhere. Usually a connector or it rubbed somewhere.
Road time, in high, for long distances, kills them. If that's what you mean by "other farm" there you go. They are not a high speed, road vehicle. They are a low speed off road vehicle.
Honda's get parked around here due to 30 years of perpetual electric shift troubles and they ride like crap compared to a Polaris.
