| Because no one can look at an animal and determine how they will grade, buyers are using the odds that straight black cattle are a high percentage Angus. As short as cattle numbers are there is strong demand for high quality grading cattle and it is hard to see that changing any time soon. Grass cattle are going nuts because there is opportunity to put cheaper gain on cattle and grow them to the point they can be fed to the heavy weights you see today and still have them grade well. The least desireable cattle are the ones that are too heavy to put on grass but will still require a long time on feed. Throw in cattle that won't grade well on top of it and you are describing many high percentage Continental cattle. It is a different world with high feed prices and short numbers. As a side note, the biggest calf I ever saw come out of a cow was a Charolais cow bred to an Angus Simmi cross bull. No calf puller was long enough, 150 pounds if it was an ounce. | |
