Minnesota | In general people outside of the area don't understand the scope of the snow depth in the northern belt. I too believe it will become an issue though I acknowledge that things can change very quickly. Little to no frost underneath will be the component that will make this change fast, but the reality is the calendar and the forecast. Southern MN has a planting date that's 2 weeks away and there is absolutely zero chance of that happening. In my short farming career this is the latest and deepest snow pack I have seen on the ground on March 28 by a longshot. This isn't crying wolf for anybody in these 3 states. We don't know the outcome yet, but I wouldn't sleep on the possibility of this becoming an issue. There's 6-10 foot snow drifts in ditches and groves yet with not one 50 degree day in the forecast. As for the PP comments, I too will not plant corn past last plant date. Been there done that and I won't do it again. 5.90 corn wouldn't convince me to plant vs take the PP and walk away. Besides, the last time I had PP, the cover crop was the best thing long term for that soil with the next couple of crops after that. I feel as if Northern SD, ND, and Northern half of MN could be in for some issues...it certainly isn't off to a great start at this point and looking like 2 weeks from now will look more or less the same. Time will tell but not a fun situation to be looking at out the backyard window. | |
