Subject: RE: JD 455 owners

Nebraska Panhandle
I have a 455 and really like it. I use it for no till on about half of my wheat acres. I summerfallow the other half and use it also for planting that wheat. I have mine set up for fertilizer. Have 300 gallons of fertilizer on the hitch. That along with 84 bushles of wheat when the drills are full makes for a lot of weight. Mine are 30 ft. drills. They do put a lot of weight on the hitch of the tractor when the drills are folded up. When in field position and raised up the drills want to lift up on the tractor. I pull mine with a 9282 4wd New Holland. They cut through standing stubble real nice. If there is moisture on top they work great. Sometimes it is bone dry on top and they still cut in good, but not as deep as you would like. I'm sure all drills work better in moist conditions. They work better in standing stubble that has never been worked better than they do if you just go out and undercut the stubble and then plant. A lot of stubble just undercut for the first time makes some of the disks drag the straw rather than roll over them. If the stubble has been disked at least once they will roll over any thing out there. What I like about them is when you turn and raise them up they don't lift the whole drill up -- just the disks and press wheels. Sunflower for instance lifts the whole machine up. (Sunflower no till is much heavier). They are great for transporting down the road from field to field. I sure like mine.
