Subject: Cotton Strippers in the SE and MidSouth

Reading the post below concerning the basket picker phaseout got me to thinking about the possibility of the widespread use of cotton strippers in the marginal dryland areas of the cotton belt in the Southeast and MidSouth. The JD 7760 may not be a feasible option for many growers and gins. Some growers have tried and successfully implemented a stripper harvest here in our area (SE) but the practice is not widespread. The UNR craze a decade ago is all but a memory now as tech fees associated with the higher seeding rates offset any benefits.

I know nothing about a stripper. I assume that our humidity and stalk size would be an issue on our area, however the reduced harvest costs associated with the stripper harvest and the ability to continue to use module builder/trucks may warrant a second look.

Can those familiar with stripper harvest please offer any insight? Would this work on a widespead scale in our area?
