North Central Ohio, across the Corn belt ! | Greywolf - 1/9/2010 10:43
The fall back is starting almost as soon as you can start rowing the corn row. Not waiting until 10-12" plant height before starting. Have I been guilty of waiting? Most definitely.
Does it maybe interfere with other operations? Maybe unless you specifically plan the operation. And then you still might get caught.
But on the flip side, taking that time before planting can have a detrimental effect equally as well. 1,2, 3 days spent before planting, rain comes in before planting is done and can't return to the field for maybe 2 weeks. What was lost in potential had the corn been planted more timely?
Just blend the pros and cons into something "livable" rather than a do or die situation. Going to the extremes has never been a consistent profit maker.
Bruce, How does applying N pre Plant ? or the day of Planting hold you up for 2-3 days
We adjusted by going from a Pre application weed control program to a Post application so that on windy days we did not have to wait for chemical weed control spray. We can Plant on those windy days !
As several others have mentioned, we save 2-3 days by not Running anything through the planter so No refill other than seed.
One man can fill seed and plant where before a tender truck driver and Loading, off loading Trips back and forth was required
A Floater can spread a given dry Blend a day before we can plant most of the time !! So over the years we can plant about 3 to 7 days Faster with efficient management practices saving Man Hours, Equipment cost's and Hours on Equipment.
I think It depends on your End goal and Your overall Planning, program from the Fall before along with managing Individual conditions
