Last couple yrs we have done rye of triticale in the fall mow in May roto chop bale it and wrap then follow with forage sorghum. Usually 3 cuttings. Total per acre avg. is 21 ton acre of both crops.
This is a good plan. I've done ss twice, first cutting is amazing, second fair, after that not worth cutting and the weeds come in.
My cows love it and even if it's a little stinky as baleage, they clean it all up. Takes good weather and a couple flips to get it dry enough for wet wrapping, its always wetter then you think.
Edit. Ive used a delayed maturity ss from Albert lea seed twice. Works well, first time I did SS it headed out to before I wanted to cut and wasn't that tall.
