SE Nebraska | We had more cases of abscesses and lump jaw/boney lump jaw show up when we started feeding rye and rye baleage. We try to get the rye in the boot stage but sometimes weather doesnt cooperate. There is a bacteria in rye/wheat/trit etc type feeds that causes the lump jaw. It doesnt effect a cow until they get a cut in their gums usually from the beards in the feed. If it is an abscess you are lucky, lance and flush. If it is truly boney lump jaw it will usually progress on it's own and will not go away. Google lump jaw cattle skulls and you will get an idea of what it looks like. This year we have started feeding organic iodine in the feed. It is a product called E.D.D.I 20 grain. We also feed iodized salt blocks and there is iodine in our mineral. So far this year no cases have showed up. | |
