| I think everybody has to realize that parts of all these management practices will work in many places, but it may look different, western WI where I am is different from MO, Manitoba, MI or ID or OH or FL. So since I use bale feeders that move to the pre placed bales you are not considering this bale grazing? Not trying to be a smart aleck but I have been doing this for over 15 years, never heard the term bale grazing till about 2 years ago, just curious. Far as the nitrogen leaching your soils will have a lot to do with it, and just how soon the stomped up parts "heal" , better distribution is always a challenge, that is one reason I place bales as close as I do, it gives me thicker coat them I maybe need, but it is the only way to get it relatively even. Far as baling without any twine or wrap, it could work, but a windstorm before they set could be very messy, why not sisal twine? Or maybe at least a portion of it maybe you can stockpile and graze later, here you better have a plan B though because cows that are walking on the drifts like this year are not going to be able to get hay under those same drifts. I have grazed third crop thru 12 inches of snow, but there was some lost due to the snow, compared ton making the hay and feeding it. If I did not have as much Alfalfa as I do spreading bales out and covering more acres of the year would also be more feasible. | |
