| We have been doing it since the mid 2000's, but with only 55-70 head in a group. I preplace bales and then move feeders and poly wire every 3-4 days on average. I like to have the hay preplaced as it is more efficient at our size to not to need to start a tractor to feed and like now with the amount of snow gets real difficult to get to the hay or to the field. Here I place 20-30 4x6 bales per acre depending on the field and when they will be on it. The fields used form now till mid March (spring thaw time) will get dragged a few times to spread things out with a old spring tooth. The field that gets stomped up will get worked with a IH 45 Vibra-shank and dragged with the spring tooth and reseeded at the end of may 1st week of June. I would think that for your numbers and the fact you are not using feeders that it may make sense to unroll the bales every 1-2 days depending on weather, I think the hay savings and better utilization would pay for the extra machine and fuel expense, and better spreading of nutrient's would be a bonus. | |
