I had noticed that my bits didn't cut as good as they should after sharpening with the 750 Drill Doctor. This is the old original model. Even though it wasn't getting them where they would cut like they should it would be a improvement from a dull bit. In one of the other threads about these someone mentioned they wouldn't cut enough of the heel off. The port where you set your bit in the chuck has a lever with 3 settings. The settings are masonary, split point and standard. I had been using the standard setting. Even though that lever has notches that hold it in each setting it can be moved out of those notches for a different setting other than the ones it shows. I picked the lever up from the top notch making the pointer of the other side be about 1/4 inch below the standard setting. I haven't done but a couple of bits I was using on a project today but they seem to be cutting better than they were using the standard setting. I did split those points but after thinking about it I might need to move back to the standard or split point setting before splitting the point. If so the bit will need to be set in the chuck again to have any affect. I would really like to try one of the newer 750 X models to see how they compare. Have any of you compared the newer one to the old 750? I sure wish I would have discovered this before spending two afternoons sharpening bits. Out of frustration yesterday while trying to drill holes in some hard steel with a hand drill I went to the shop grinding wheel and ground the heel off some. After that it cut good. This was one of the bits I had sharpened before discovering what I could do different with the Drill Doctor. |
