Subject: RE: Testing herd bulls

We turn bulls out May 20th. I run in a couple of associations. Our bylaws you have clean trich and good semen test a minimum of 45 days before the turnout date. I try and do my bulls January or first part of February. They way if I need to replace any bulls I still have time. We try and have all bulls bought before the new year, in November or December.

I just laugh when guys complain they can't test bulls in cold weather. I never had a problem breeding my milk cows in cold weather. Just an excuse to not test them.

Edited to add the reason for 45 days is because if you come up with trich you need three clean tests before turn out. If not we may ask producer to take cows home, if no clean bulls and refuses to replace bulls. Tough to buy 2 year old bulls in May here. They need to be 2 year olds to turn out.
