I was wanting a semi-auto .223 about 2 years ago and bought a mini 14, had it less than 2 months. It would not shoot anything I tried worth a darn. Even custom loaded match grade ammo would not group tighter than 5" at 100 yards. Traded it off on a Rock River varmint AR. The rock river is very inpressive will shoot a 3 shot group at 100" yards you can cover with a nickle. Ended up buying another on a few months ago. One thing to remember for maximum accuracy is if you are going to shoot bullets lighter than 60 grains you need a barrel with 1" in 12" twist. Most AR's and mini 14's have a 1" in 7"- 9" twist. Rock River is the only company I know that offers the 1 in 12 as an options. Buy the AR, Ruger builds some quality stuff but the Mini 14 is not one of there best products, it may function well but do not expect very good accuracy, some of the loads I tried I would have been lucky to hit a pie plate at 100 yards. Just my experience.
