Subject: MF 510 combine engine - good or bad?

Last year it seemed unanimous that the 510 is a piece of junk not worth fixing up as a combine. So ... I am guessing its a Perkins in there? If the engine is decently reliable, I think the most useful project for it would be a stationary PTO power unit, for the forage blower, manure pump, generator, etc. Just wanted to make sure, is the engine worth the time? TIA

As far as combines of that age go the 510 was a heck of a good machine. I cut my teeth on one and then went to a 760. The 760 had a lot more capacity but was broke down so much the 510 would get more cut in a day.

Bring it on down, I'll take it. Got plenty of them running now.

IMO The engine was the only good thing about a MF 510. Had to be a little careful engaging the PTO clutch, if you put a load on it to fast it would strip the cogs off of the outside of the clutch disk

Just blead the pump and loosen up fuel line to 1 injector and it will start easy.

Not every time. They can be hard to get running. We had one last summer that took all day to get going. It had been sitting up for a few years and was stuck, got that fixed but we like to have never got the air bled out of the system. Tends to be that way when you have to pull all the injectors to get it freed up.

We had 510 gassers.  Had 327 industrial Chevy engines in them.  Sounded great on straight pipes.

Yeah, and those top outlet exhaust manifolds on a 510 gasser work great for adapting small block Chevy engines into tractors and other farm equipment. :-)

Your engine has value, it looks like you have an offer to buy. If not, I have pulled several of them over the last few years and sold them for various power unit applications. Nothing was easier on fuel than the old smaller perkins out of a 510, 750-860.

But I am assuming the engine has some sort of belt drive for the combine, like our JD 6600?

So I planned on finding a shaft from a 1000 pto implement from a junk yard, get a keyway cut into it, pulley and sleeve, mount on a little trailer along with a 45 gallon drum for fuel, or perhaps 2. I hate refilling the stationary stuff. Another advantage is the odd terrain we have (uncle built barn next to silo, blower tractor is at like a 30% upward slope, blower is horizontal) will be easier to get drive shafts lined up and not rattling.

510's had a stub shaft bolted on the engine. All we did to ours was get a 4 bolt PTO hub and slide it on the shaft and go. It is keyed already.

Or 350 on the later Western Specials. Great exhaust sounds from that straight piped 350 running around 2500 rpm all day long. The 354 Perkins diesel was a cheaper engine to run in the 550 Massey but the 510 was a better machine. Less problems. Heres my 510 back about 20 years ago. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twR8fU4T8fI&feature=mfu_in_order&lis...
