Subject: Bumble Bees

Nevada, Iowa
I think this was brought up awhile back but I don't know if the situation was ever fixed.

I went to move a three point forklift that has not been out of it's place a summer. I backed up to it with a tractor without a cab and before I could say s*%t, I was stung twice. I'm pretty awkward at it but can still run short range for an old fat man so I didn't get hit anymore.

I am all for bugs that pollinate, live and let live but these devils are in my way. I think they are in the ground near this lift but I am not totally sure. The plan is to move the unit with a tractor with a cab and see if they follow the lift or stay where it was parked. If they stay, they will have to be exterminated as I need to gain access to this area now. What product is most effective? Past experience has taught me the gasoline and wasp spray are not that effective on bees. Anyone have any better ideas? Thanks

One of those stings was on the temple, man that sucker has swollen up. in fact I em fellin aliddle woosie betr sine offf fer now.............................................................

Raid makes wasp and hornet killer that will shoot about 10ft. Works on bees as well. We always keep some in the hay barn. I'd pull to the fork lift with a cab tractor and bump once, see where the bees come from. Then come back later and soak them good

I'm allergic to bee stings although it's getting less every year. I buy a case of Brakleen every year. What I don't have to use on bees, gets used for cleaning greasy parts.

It'll spray as far as any bee spray and kill quicker.

I have been stung more this year than I ever have but by red wasps. My mother was using a push mower one time and ran over a hole with bees in it and the mower was sucking them out and stung her in the head about 20 times. They are bad dudes and seem to be real aggressive when in the ground. I bet when you move the piece they stay put.

I did move the forklift and they did stay put, well sort of. They were so torqued that it was hard to tell but as they calmed a bit they were all circling the spot where the lift had been setting. I read a little further from a Google search and found a product recommended for them that I have on hand, Cyper WP. I have been mixing small batches of that up in a hose end sprayer and seem to be reducing numbers by leaps and bounds.

I was just kidding about the woosie stuff and really shouldn't make light of it. My temple was swollen and it hurt down into my lower jaw but all is well now.

I don't think I have seen more than one bumble bee per year in the last four or five. Probably less honey bees but they seem to be making a come back here this year. One last note regarding bumble bees, reportedly their design would indicate that it should be impossible for them to fly. I am calling BS on that, they can move right out when they're po'd. he he

Ron I used some brake clean on some wasps the other day and it hardly effected them, not like it used to. I wonder if they changed the formula? Used some foaming engine cleaner and it got them but not very fast.
take care

What a bunch you all are.

Holy smokes.

Everyone around these parts knows you move your implement after dark.

Pollinators wont leave nest after sunset.

But you all got to chemicalize them first thing.

Yea right ........Live and let live....................

Chebanse, IL.....

Is it still possible to buy Carbon Tetrachloride? It used to be in all the brass fire extinguishers that looked like grease guns. It will kill bugs pretty fast...but people too, but so will other things that are much louder to use. I believe carbon tet is in the brake cleaner product...right?

Carbon tet anyone? I'd put it in a spot sprayer & make sure you park UPwind, which means the product will be blowing AWAY from you!

Was the Brake Clean chlorinated or non-chlorinated ? That might make a difference .

You can use soapy water on wasps and kill them just like hornet killer. Use something like dawn and doesnt have to be super stout either.

Normally I do live and let live. I would be all for moving the implement and letting it go but I will need to have repeated passage to this area for the next several weeks. I am not going to wait for a killing frost to proceed with my activities and I am not going to work at night just to accommodate the bees. If I could see some way to accomplish my goal without repeated exposure to stings, I would have done that.

I have a couple of open front sheds that attract barn swallows, I will put cardboard or tarps over the machinery in them just to accommodate the birds. There is some nuisance with them but I enjoy watching them work and benefit from the bugs they consume. I don't have to kill everything I see, just the stuff that can't be reckoned with.

we had some building hives under the cement under gearheads. we took a pupmp sprayer full of gas (at night) hose them down and strike a match. cleaned house they were pissed but it took care of them. other than that we just use break cleaner, non-chlorinated i believe. it always works pretty good

i have the kind of house that the bees, particularily hornets and wasps , build nests in the walls and when things cool down outside, they come inside. i have an old widex bottle with a pinpoint squirter on it. i fill the bottle with a solution of dish detergent and water. a dirert hit on the bee and in 2 seconds it is dead on the floor. apparently the detergent coats the lungs and they cannot breathe.

my 2 cents
