Looking at purchasing a 972 and I really want some opinions about them. We currently run a FD70 and are looking for a draper for our other machine. We want a draper that can cut beans on our flat ground and we have been told this model does a good job. We are also looking at another flex draper but most of our ground is flat and if one of these can do a good enough job then it will save us a bunch! Thanks in advance.

a 973 would be better. it has a different shaped cuterbar that is lower (same as 974 flex draper)

Look at 973 instead of 972, the latter is designed for small grains where you are up off the ground.

We found a carryover 973 36' last year and just loved it, the FD 70 is the replacement.  A 972 =FD60   974=FD80 also the benefit to the older ones besides the cost.  You actually get a 37'6" cut with a 36' header whereas with the FD70 it is only 35' or 40' etc.(comes in 5' increments).   You can shave the ground with the 973 and it has a fair amount of flex, we love it.        Good Luck!

Not quite.

972 - D50
973 - D60
974 - FD70

Go for the flex draper. I run a 25 foot 972 I wish it had some flex even on my flat ground , slight tillage ridges show up cutting beans.

I have a D50 on a swather and D60 and D70 on combines. The MacDon guyes have been pounding it into my head that there isnt really a cutterbar difference between a 50 or 60. In the past we have had a 960/962, 972 and 973, and in those years there were a difference inbetween adapters, cut-height, and cutterbar angle which could definantly affect the performance. But from my experience a 50 is just cheaper than a 60 (lighter canvas, motors, ect.)

Anyways back to you question, I really liked our old 972, there was nothing wrong with those headers. The key with any macdon is having it set-up and tuned in for what you are doing. It took along time screwing around to get our FD70 to the point where i was happy with it, and its the same with 972, but like i say there isnt anything wrong with them. If cutting real low is what you need, you should consider adding a hyd top link, but im sure you already know that.
