Subject: Final drive on a D6D Cat

Middle Tennessee
I have been looking for a dozer for couple of months and have found a D6D. Problem is the final drive on the left side was low and a magnet picked up some cuttings everything okay on the right. Everything else was working at about thelevel I would suspect. Had a hyd leak at the tank did not appear to costly to fix. I think may have had a small transmission leak but no sure. What would you guess it would cost to replace the bearings and reseal the final. I found several years ago that the price of the machine is nothing compared to the repairs that you can get into in the first 90 days. Learned the hard way.

Thanks
Toby

If the bearings are worn much the gears are also...dead axle may be bent...max bill labor and all parts in final drive was 9,000 two years ago...the hydraulic tank is not hard to keep from leaking, works better with two guys.

dave morgan - 11/5/2006 09:00 the hydraulic tank is not hard to keep from leaking, works better with two guys.

That statement confuses me.  Do you mean one guy to run the machine, and one guy to hold his finger over the leak?
