Subject: MM corn sheller models?

Minneapolis Moline corn shellers were extremely popular around here into the 1980s, and still for the few who still do ear corn.

I’m (very) familiar with the model D, which it seems they made about forever? Older were belt driven, had no top cross auger, mostly all flat chain and sprockets. Newer had a vee belt to the elevator and roller chain and pto drive and a top cross auger which still wasn’t too tall. I think they were all way a D, no other newer model?

The big fella was the model E, which evolved into a model 1200, and then a 1210 when White and Oliver were in the mix.

So, I just was shown pictures of a B2.

What is a B2 for age, size, I didn’t realize there was that model. I see some on YouTube, one is driven with big tires for ‘friction gears’ to get the rotation right? Huh.

Any other MM sheller models I don’t know about? There were a lot of truck mounted ones, I thought they were just a D or E sitting on a truck, but maybe that was it’s own model too?

My grandfather and dad did custom corn shelling back in the day. The old D sheller you described is what I remember. Worked summer and winter. I got in on it toward the end. Hard work and never knew what critters you'd run into under those corn cribs! And did it for 3 cents per bushel including hauling. Good memories. Can't help you on the other models.

Interesting question. I owned a later D for some years. I was not aware of any model other than the D, E, 1200 and 1210, but my knowledge of MM machinery is limited. E size machines were more common around here.

D was much more common here. No one wanted to shovel fast enough to keep up with an E!

The E was more for the traveling sheller fellas, with a work crew to go with.

I have seen a few truck mounted, but never paid enough attention to know They were a different model.

Always enjoyed ear corn, still have all the equipment, but the lack of speed and no kids to be hitch pin connectors has slowed me down on it!

This came up.

Judging by the pictures out there the B2 looks like it might have been intended for truck mounting, and about E size. The configuration resembles an E also. D and E had the cob conveyer and clean grain elevator on opposite sides.

Chebanse, IL.....

We had the "E". Bought it new in '56 or so? Our Dad & Uncle did a lot of shelling back then, our own & custom. Those were some of the coldest conditions I ever recall working in. A cold overcast windy day in the alleyway of a crib. Can't beat it for misery. It was a relief to get enough corn out of the crib so you could get in & scoop. At least you were somewhat out of the wind.

We sold the MM E in the early '70s. It's still in the neighborhood though not doing much if any shelling. The pto drive was an aftermarket item since standard at the time was still flat belt drive.

In this photo, our 720D was almost new then also. I read about the 1200, but never saw one.

By the way, for us the MM E replaced this wooden Ottawa "C" sheller. Note the running gear.....cut down wooden spokes running rubber tires which was common for the day. The Ottawa did NOT have pto drive

Paul, there was a little tiny MM sheller model. Not sure if it was belt or pto. I don't remember the model. I can remember seeing one.

I was around and ran 1200 and 1210's. There was a red painted MM with White Farm Equipment decals in my area. I don't miss shelling corn, but the farm wives of those days would put on a heckuva meal for shellers, truckers, and helpers.

We had the MM hand crank sheller on the farm years ago. It is LONG gone. The custom sheller we hired at 2 cents/bu had a D on a Farmall Gas 560.
Great times... he and his kids spoke German to each other, English to everyone else. Wondered what was being said sometimes.

I had a small MM sheller for a while, I think it was a "C", been gone for quite a few years. Just the right size for 1 guy to scoop into. Had enough drags to do a 16' wire crib. IIRC, I gave $50 for it, used it for 6-8 years after the custom sheller in my area quit, then sold it on a consignment auction for $500. Think it ended up in Wisconsin.

I have a 1200 setting in the shed. Where would be a market for it? Are there any Amish classified ads?

Put it on Craigslist - it seems like there is always someone looking for these shellers. Don't forget to post pictures with it!

I was at the Half Century of Progress a few years ago and watched some corn shelling. They had a U Moline on a Moline corn sheller. I have no idea what model the Moline sheller was but I was amazed at the amount of corn they could push through the sheller. The U was maxed out and the straight pipe would let you know it was maxed out.

The cage sheller is a very high capacity thing for its size. Just doesn’t adapt to other crops. It used up our IHC 300 also, and that was the smaller D model. We ran 3 pieces of dragline, that covered almost a full side of the 40 foot wood crib.

Does anybody collect/restore MM stuff?

I got a 6' pull type combine and a wire tie baler--hate to just scrap old things.

Your all in luck. There is a MM corn sheller for sale. Craig's list Eau claire Wi. $500. Not involved with owner in anyway. Just thought you may like the pics. I remember the steel wheel under the front half.

I have never seen one operating in person, but I guess a Cook sheller will put a Minneapolis to shame. There are a few videos on YouTube of a Cook sheller at work - now THAT is one corn shelling machine!

The only way I found to run a MM sheller was maxed out. Not so long ago I ran across a video of someone running a D sheller, just for fun. At one point they had footage of the cobs dropping into the cob conveyor, and there was considerable shell corn coming with it. My first though was yup, they ain’t pushing it hard enough!

My Dad & uncle had a MM Model E sheller & did quite a bit of custom work in the area. It had the flat belt drive & powered by a IH "M". They said it was a good exercise machine. Basically a rotor machine.

Never had any experience with the shellers. My job was always on the other end of the drag with the rake in my hands.
Honestly do miss those days. Shelling corn and baling hay in small squares. Was harder work, but the food and conversation was always good.

I was 5 when the 4 neighbors stopped filling silage together. That appeared to be a good time, but I don’t remember much but mom trying to keep me out of everyone’s way.

Manure hauling the winter stocked piles onto small grain fields in August was also a group effort, I remember my uncle still having us all over into my late teen years and spreading it.

My dad and my uncle picked ear corn together through the 70s and shelled the remainder in September, so I got to be a big part of that as well.

I miss the neighborhood group efforts.
