When i bought my skidloader the bucket had the edge on it, but it has the holes to actually bolt a cutting edge onto it. It was already pretty well worn, so i figured i would just wear it out and then replace it and add the bolt on after that. Well the time has come that it is plain worn out so i need to cut it out and weld in the new edge on the bucket. What is the best way to do this? Do i need to preheat it with a torch or something? There are a lot of welding shops around that could do it so i could take it there too, but if i can do it without warping the bucket i will. Thanks

I was told those cutting edges need to be put on before the original edge is worn or they will not hold and come loose, any truth to that?

They are really not that bad to do and you’ll be suprised how easy it is to keep straight as long as you have a few good clamps and a 250 sized wire welder pretty easy job.

A little heat never hurts anything, a big propane fired weed burner would get it warmed up pretty good, just make you warm the Bucket up too.

With that being said I’ve never warmed one up, too impatient I guess. So what I do is to divide the bit into thirds, depending on bit length, start on one end make tack welds about 8-10” apart, top and bottom (usually stand the bucket on end) then start making 2-3” stitch welds across from each other front to back starting at one end then go to the middle third then the end third, then come came back and split the the middles of the thirds again. Work your way across, come back and split the middles again.
Rinse repeat until done. The bottom doesn’t need to be welded solid, usually the third pass of stitching is enough.

Most weld-on cutting edge is 1060 carbon steel, a preheat would be best but plenty is welded without. It can be tricky to keep the edge flat, I usually tack the edge well as tacks will pull out of the hard edge easily, then clamp it flat and begin welding. It won't take long to figure out which way the edge wants to pull, while it's still hot put a shim under the low spot/spots and clamp the rest down to pull it slightly past straight, finish welding and let it cool fully before removing clamps. Flip over and weld the bottom and make sure you put plenty of weld where the sides come down to the edge.

I am not the best welder around but have done 2 new edges on buckets. And have had them work fine. If front edge of bucket is worn thin cut back a little to get to good metal then clamp it and tack weld every 6" or so along edge. Then weld it up top and bottom. Not sure if all are alike but the ones I did had ends that turned up at 90 degrees which I liked they may all be like that.

my questions is, how good of shape is the rest of the bucket? is it worth welding a new edge on? most new 72" buckets can be had for $1200 and not waste half a day cutting and welding on a bucket.

Just my .02

Good point, a new bit WILL NOT make a silk purse out of a sows ear.

The rest of the bucket is in good shape yet, mainly just used for scraping concrete cow yards so it took the original edge off fairly quick

I  used 7018 rod which seemed to work well.  Didn't preheat but might not be a bad idea.

I've welded on cutting edge on a 7' bucket, it turned out ok, but if I need one again I figured I would weld a piece of mild steel to the bucket and then bolt a bolt on cutting edge to the mild steel.

If you are just welding in a piece of mild steel to bolt the edge to, preheating is not necessary just clamp it good and weld it as the other guys said.

Just make sure whatever you set the bucket on is secure. Local guy was welding a new cutting edge on and the bucket slid off the sawhorses. Landed on his feet about halfway from his toes to his ankles. Took him quite a while to recover from that.
