What is out there for spreading cover crops onto stubble and winter wheat? Everyone in this area uses 12v ATV spreaders, usually a Herd GT77, ourselves included.

The Herd is ok. Its probably the best of all the 12v spreaders on the market. Complaints are that it only holds 40-50lbs of seed. Depending on rate and what we are spreading that could mean 4 acres to a fill. And it sucks backtracking empty, so sometimes you fill every pass (2-3 acres). Other complaints are lack of rate control. Once you have the gate setting and speed worked out it is very accurate, but getting there is tedious.

Is there anything out there with rate control that holds more seed that still fits on an ATV?

We sell some Herd seeders. There is a larger model, the I-92, that holds 200lbs. but it is for UTV's like Gators and Rangers and the manual states that it is not to be used with four wheeler type ATV's.

We use the GT-77 on a Honda Rancher. Works best with two people, one on the ATV, the other has the bag open and ready to dump each round. When we just have one person, we usually throw another bag on the rack and re-fill as needed. On half mile runs we can usually get three rounds before loading up again.

How would the smaller one work on a 1025r tractor.....3 point. And what would it cost?

Email is in profile if you'd rather.

I don't know if you would gain productivity with that.

1025r maxes out at ~9 mph and has no suspension. Honda Rancher is pretty comfortable in 3rd gear at 14-20 mph.

Always carry a couple bags on the front. helps to balance it and don't have to deadhead. Use to walk fifty acres a year with hand spreader in march mud, to winter seed. Long field you carried a couple bags to the center and other end ,added just enough to get back. Running back with a four wheeler doesn't sound so bad.

Ground drive pull types are the best option, IMO. Can get some decent hopper capacity without the electric motor. Win win.

We've got one of these small herd spreaders. Had the same complaints as you so it's been modified a couple times and it works really well now. Used to try and carry 2 or 3 bags on the ATV but turns were hard and you still had to stop and fill often. We took the hopper off and built one out of plywood that holds a lot more. This helped but made the ATV very back heavy and we couldn't fill the box. Now we have a gator and it works awesome. can put 5 bags in the box and have as many more in the bed as I need.

Using the GPS also works good for keeping you on the right spacing and it records acres covered making it much easier to set the rate.

Lely is your best spreader but you pay for what you get. Ground driven so your speed changes don't make as much difference.

I took a John Deere spreader that they sell at Lowe’s and once the ground drive broke on it, (because they all break eventually) I put a 12 volt motor on it. It holds 175 lbs I think?

The motor is a 12volt fan motor for a Chevy truck. Lol
